Health officials are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella infections tied to the consumption of raw oysters. As of late December 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports at least 64 illnesses across 22 states, with 20 hospitalizations and no deaths reported to date.

The CDC notes that the hospitalization rate in this outbreak is higher than typical for oyster-related Salmonella cases, raising particular concern for vulnerable individuals. Of the people interviewed by public health officials, approximately 74% reported eating raw oysters in the week before becoming ill.

The exact source of the contaminated oysters—such as a specific harvesting area or distributor—has not yet been identified. The CDC and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are actively tracing supply chains, and no recall has been issued at this time. The outbreak remains ongoing, and additional cases may emerge as reporting can take several weeks.
